ECD Programme update – 3rd Quarter

The Department of Social Development recently issued a registration certificate to the first of crèches the ECD programme is working with in the Waterloo area. Under the Children’s Amendment Act 2007, a clearance certificate from the Department of Health is needed prior to an application being lodged with the Department of Social Development to legally run the facility. This application will include information such as the number of children to be accommodated, the qualifications of the applicant, the business hours of the facility and its disciplinary policy. The ECD programme is delighted with the help it has been able to offer this crèche to bring it to this point.

A programme of Childhood Milestone Assessment is in process. Teachers and ECD staff have been monitoring the developmental milestones (key skills which follow a predictable pattern as a child ages) of selected children in a given group. Now a second measurement is being conducted and results being processed.

The ECD educators have done courses through the Unlimited Child and Natal Early Learning Resource Unit (NELRU).
