Sunday 11 March will see the 40th staging of the celebrated Cape Town Cycle Tour, the world’s biggest timed cycle race. Among the 35 000 riders will be the #DominoRiders raising much-needed funds for The Domino Foundation’s Recycle Swop Shop. The programme has three recycle swop shops operating in a number of impoverished communities in the Western Cape. Our vision is to uplift these communities through using recyclable goods as a means of exchange for basic necessities. Community members collect recyclable materials and bring them to the Recycle Swop Shop where the materials are weighed and are paid for in cashless tokens. These are then used in the shop to purchase basic food, toiletries and clothing. An added benefit is a reduction of recyclable materials going into landfill sites and in the beautifying of the communities through waste removal.
The #DominoRiders’ efforts will help the Recycle Swop Shop programme continue to provide its service to the communities and allow us to reach our dream of opening new swop shops in local townships.
