What are you doing with your 67 Minutes? #MandelaDay2015

MandelaDay2015Excitement is mounting here at The Domino Foundation as the countdown has begun for this year’s International Mandela Day.

We have put together some action-packed activities, to help you celebrate Mandela Day and spend your 67 minutes serving your local community. As Mandela Day falls over a weekend, we will be celebrating on FRIDAY 17 JULYso book your 67 minute time-slot ASAP!

HOW IT WORKS:

Tailor made to suit your needs, the mission is simple: Spend 67 minutes of your day to support those less fortunate. Choose an activity below to support, book a 60 minute time slot, purchase and gather your required items for your station and arrive on Friday 17 July and get to work!

Below we have outlined FOUR Action Stations, each designed to assist our community in a multitude of ways. We have allocated 60 minute time slots per station ranging from 09h00 to 15h00 throughout the day. Simply choose an action station, select a desired time slot, gather the required items (see below) and attend our Mandela Day festivities on Friday 17 July. IT’S THAT EASY!

If you are unable to join us at our event but would still like to get involved, WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU! We will be running ‘collection drives’ leading up to Mandela day for project-needed items (see list below), as well as setting up a 6m x 7m ‘DONATION STATION’ where you can drop off these items and spare clothes, blankets, shoes and groceries over and above your chosen activity. So clean out your cupboards, run drives at your office, get your colleagues to do the same and bring along some extra donations before or on the day!

DonationStationTogether we can make a difference!

 ACTION STATIONS:

ACTION STATION 1: SARMIE STACK

Spend your #67minutes at The Sarmie Stack Station and make peanut butter sandwiches for the hungry in our community. Last year we made over 4 000 sandwiches and this year we are setting a challenge of making 6 700 delicious sandwiches. Challenge your colleagues and friends to make 300, 600 or even 1 000 sandwiches! Bring along all the ingredients below, grab your friends and let’s take action, inspire change and serve our local community.

We assist a number of families and individuals that are in crisis, both here in Durban North and in the township community. Each hamper can feed a family of four for a one week period, which provides necessary meals during school holidays and over weekends, when general feeding schemes close down. At this station, volunteers will bring along items from the list below; sort, package & wrap their hampers; and have the opportunity to write an encouragement card for families in need! Each parcel is valued at R200; and consists of various groceries and toiletry items. So grab your friends, bring the required goodies below and let’s help feed our community.

Spend your #67minutes at The Blanket of Love Station and make quilt-like blankets for our children at our babies home to take with them when they get adopted into their happily-ever-afters. We will purchase all items needed for the day’s activity, including fabric paints, stamps and stencils – all you do is bring along your creative juices and we take care of the rest! Each blanket will be divided into 8 squares, with each team member choosing to paint and decorate their piece of fabric as they wish. All squares will be sown together to make an entire blanket. Each blanket costs R400, and you can have as many or few members in each team (Maximum of 8 people). For a team of 8 people, a total cost of R400 per blanket (R50 each!), which covers paints, fabric materials and the cost of a seamstress. As you can imagine, we would need to purchase items BEFORE Friday 17 July, so please ensure booking and payment of blanket is complete before Friday 10 July!
