LIFE SKILLS
Empowering school learners to make wise life-style choices and career decisions.
The majority of the schools in the South African government education system are under-resourced and staffed by unmotivated, poorly trained educators.
Young learner's lives are often marked by violence, truancy and low moral values, and the inevitable negative impact on pre-adolescent school learners’ morale and discipline generally results in poor essential academic performance. Many experience high emotional stress, anger, insecurity, poor self-confidence, and are inadequately informed on fundamental life issues to make wise lifestyle choice.
What Does God Say About Them?
“In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory.” (Isaiah 61:3)
Sustainable Development Goals
National Development Plan
This plan envisions a South Africa where everyone feels free yet bounded to others; where everyone embraces their full potential, a country where opportunity is determined not by birth, but by ability, education and hard work.
Learners are affirmed as special, unique & irreplaceable
The power of community
The Life Skills Programme provides a values-based education partnership to Grades 4 to 7 learners, giving the tools with which to make wise life choices. It counters the negative environment in many homes and schools by centring around respect for self, caring for others and seeking their good.
Learners are equipped with relationship-building opportunities and life orientation tools for individual awareness of current values and for setting sustainable standard values for their futures. In addition to the Life Skills lessons taught, the programme’s team undertakes individual counselling, and runs various extra-mural activities.
2023 Reflection
Challenges of over-crowded classrooms, underqualified teachers and a lack of teaching resources and post-study employment opportunities are the millstones limiting the majority of the South African youth.
This programme empowers Grade 4, 5 and 6 learners to make wise and informed life-style choices through the 4-year Life Orientation (LO) Curriculum. The four youth workers delivered a termly timetable of class sessions, valuable one-on-one sessions and extra mural sessions designed to keep children active, stimulated and engaged after school. Parent Workshops were run to strengthen parent-child relationships and the Leadership Day Camp was a massive success to foster stronger peer accountability and greater positive influences.
