Turning 40 is a significant age in many cultures. When he hit the Big Four-Oh, Sergio Accolla embraced the occasion and decided to celebrate by paying forward. “I have been very blessed in my life and I wanted to be a blessing to others who would have no way of reciprocating.”
He had heard of the total makeover taking place at The Domino Foundation’s Babies’ Home: new roof; electrics; tiling; a repaint throughout; installation of a water tank and much more besides. His wife, Shelley, took over from there, contacting the Domino office and saying, “It’s my husband’s birthday next month and instead of a gift, he’d like to support the Domino Babies Home through a donation of goods, and then spend a day helping with the kids or anything that needed to be done.”
Sergio brought along family and work colleagues to help the “party” really swing. Armed with a list of household items - bookshelves, toy chests, an old garden swing - they came ready for action equipped with sandpaper, paint brushes, pots of paints, masking tape and loads of enthusiasm!
By the time the celebration of Sergio’s four decades was done, the old furniture had taken on a new life and the birthday boy was able to say it had been one of the best he had ever had. “The little residents of the transition home have all come from traumatic backgrounds in one way or another. I am glad we could be part of making the home a little better. It was a very happy birthday for me!”
Domino’s Nicky Walton, who had been the link lady, invited anyone else who would like to play forward when they want to mark a big occasion, to contact the NPO’s offices on 031 1100730 or hello @ domino.org.za
