It isn’t only Monday which brings washday blues to The Domino Foundation’s safe house for survivors of gender-based violence. With five adult women, a pair of toddlers and one house mother in residence each night, there is a pile of laundry needing to be washed each day of the week. And then, every day, there are other staff members and volunteers who go through their fair share of uniforms, hand towels and other miscellaneous items which get grubby. Manager at the house, Gill Hammond, commented: “Our present washing machine is well past its sell-by date and we do need a sturdy industrial 19kg or 25kg appliance to lighten the laundry load we deal with every day.”.

She looked ruefully at the woefully inadequate washing line which barely copes with the daily offering of laundered items needing to dry. “What we need is an industrial strength galvanised line which would be sturdy and durable.”

Gill appealed to anyone in the community who could help the safe house with either or both of these items to contact her at restore @ domino.org.za

Juliet Matipedza, house mother at The Domino Foundation’s safe house for human-trafficking survivors, surveys a day’s load of laundry which the house’s aged washing machine cannot handle.
