Community service hours might be a grudge task for some high schoolers. For Grade 9 St Henry’s Marist College student, Makaylen Cameron, it was no such thing when she put in her time at The Domino Foundation’s South Nutrition’s kitchen in Amanzimtoti, the town which she calls home. According to Cheryl Dann, who heads the Toti operation, Makaylen was a delight, exemplifying one of core values of Marist education - Love of Work: “She was with us over two days and, in that time, joined the team making peanut butter sandwiches for the early childhood development centres with whom we partner, and then got stuck into packing relief hampers for families and individuals in distress…and smiled all the way through!”

St Henry’s College Principal, Dr Stephen Leech, commented: “Family Spirit is another of the pillars on which Marist education is built. Makaylen’s approach to fulfilling her community service obligations shows how we believe that, just as she is part of the St Henry’s family, so also her life touches the wider community, especially those in need.”

Makaylen added: “I loved being with the Domino team, knowing that my contribution would be making a difference in other people’s lives.” She encouraged learners to consider working together with Domino in one of its programmes or with other groups making a difference in the lives of vulnerable and marginalised people. “Helping kids is my passion!”

Cheryl invited students interested in doing their community service with Domino to contact her on nutrtionsouth @ domino.org.za.
