That well-known author, Anonymous, wrote that happiness doesn't have just one address. The Domino Foundation’s Babies’ Home has been based at 125 Adelaide Tambo Drive for 18 years, but Durban borer and damp have conspired to set the roofing structure up for a total make-over. So, the band of six little ones and their dedicated Crisis Mom and carers have had to relocate for three months while engineers, builders and roofing specialists put together a safe, waterproof covering to withstand the rigours of weather, “wildlife” and time.
Providence has had a major hand in the new address where the transition home will operate until the start of September. The urgent call for temporary accommodation for the duration of the work went out on social media and in the local community publications. The plea was heard and a generous benefactor offered his property of 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms to the Babies’ Home programme as a gift to the children and organization. And to top it all in the spirit of serendipity, the interim address is in the very same road just 800m away.
House mother, Precious Thabethe, described packing up the paraphernalia which inevitably is part of loving and nurturing a home full of children: “We were prepared for what was going to be a major upheaval, but, when we discovered that we would only have to move down the road, we all heaved a collective sigh of relief. Now, our volunteers, friends and donors will still find us easily, and the two children who go to preschool can be got there with no extra effort.”
Precious and all her team were effusive in expressing their gratitude to their benefactor who, like the no-name fellow who penned the line at the start of this piece, wishes to stay anonymous. She added that after just a few days at their new address, the entire Babies’ Home cohort is very comfortably (and happily) settled in.
