The stats for 2024 are impressive: more than 61 000 sandwiches and 78 000 servings of porridge made and delivered to 2840 vulnerable people (mainly in 29 Early Childhood Development centres, 3 primary and 5 high schools) and 522 relief hampers packed for individuals and families in crisis situations. The Domino Foundation’s Nutrition programme’s South Coast operation valiantly met some basic needs of many underserved people in the Amanzimtoti area last year and is set to expand its reach this year. “We see the needs in our communities and know we have to step up to meet them,“ said Cheryl Dann, South Nutrition Co-ordinator, “but we are tight on space.”
Cheryl explained that Kingsway Church International (KCi) has generously provided kitchen space at its Doonside site since the programme began operating in the South basin area. “We are so grateful for the premises, but a great challenge is, even before we expand our operations, that we are extremely tight on storage space. The buckets for the relief hampers, non-perishable goods and hygiene products are cramping our food-preparation space in the kitchen and we desperately need a secure dedicated storage room of some description. ”Each month, the programme also has to find room among all its culinary operations to stack bags of porridge mix weighing about 1 400kg for the crèches.
Cheryl and the programme’s team are appealing for either a 3 or 6 metre container or a prefab structure to house the programme’s essentials which need to be out of the way of peanut butter sandwich-making and preparing daily deliveries.
