A clutch of babes and toddlers plus their temporary “moms” are on the move. Their fixed address at 127 Adelaide Tambo Avenue, Durban North will be the scene of major renovations for the three winter months and won’t be a suitable haven for the “family” at The Domino Foundation’s Babies’ Home. House “Mum”, Precious Thabethe, explained that the roof comes off the home at the start of May for a complete replacement. This means she and the eight children permanently at the home, plus the two staff who are on duty at any one time, need a safe space for the duration. “We began our drive for the R1,3 million needed for the project at the start of the year and have been amazed at the incredible generosity shown by the community. It’s in the bank and it’s all set to go. But the home’s residents also have to go…for a while.”

The foundation’s Justice co-ordinator, Natale Ogden, added that a large unfurnished house either in Durban North or within easy reach of the area is the temporary shelter the Babies’ Home is looking for. “The toddlers attend a local pre-primary school and Precious’ own children are learners at a primary school in the area. We have so many well-wishers and volunteers who are involved with what we do and need to be able to get to us easily. We can’t be too far from our present location.” She added that a either a 4-bedroom house or a 3-bedroom one with a cottage would be ideal.

The two ladies appealed to the community to contact the Domino offices with information on how this challenge can be solved. Natalie is on justice @ domino.org.za and the Domino offices on 031 110 0730.
