Ninety years ago, an animated cartoon “Christmas Comes But Once a Year” was produced. No-one could argue with the title, but it begged the question: “Shouldn’t the spirit of giving be encouraged all year round?”

The same could be asked about Mandela Day being celebrated only on one day out of 364: “Why not be motivated to serve every day?”, or, in the words of The Domino Foundation’s Connector, Thembeka Gumede, “Why not Build Beyond the Day?”

Throughout the year, Thembeka is on the campaign trail, informing, inspiring and then coordinating volunteers who respond to her call to step forward and give of their time and talents to make a difference in the lives of the NPO’s approximately 12 000 beneficiaries. “I do it because I am passionate about stirring the community to be part of the answer to the challenges so many are facing. I do it not only for the organisation I am part of but also on behalf of many other NPOs and groups committed to bettering the lot of the underserved.”

Thembeka recalled Madiba’s words: “We can all do more to reach out, take care, and serve the well-being of others. No difficulty, problem or breakdown need stop you from choosing and living a life of service.” She thanked every group and person who put up their hands 2025 and again this year to give 67 minutes to make a difference, and said that it is ongoing involvement which will make a sustainable difference in the country.

She encouraged every fellow citizen to find somewhere to serve cheerfully and wholeheartedly. “It is easy to give up a little over an hour on 18 July each year, but it takes commitment to make the welfare of others part of one’s lifestyle throughout the year.” She encouraged everyone to find an opportunity where what they have to offer can change the lives of others for the better and then to stick at it.
